If you’ve got a 4WD-equipped truck, Jeep, or SUV and you’re really serious about going off-road in rough conditions, you might already know that all-terrain tires aren’t going to get the job done for you. All-terrain tires are great for daily drivers and the occasional trip off the pavement in light mud, sand, gravel, or snow, but for the tougher off-road duties they often don’t have the durability, traction, and ground clearance you need to successfully get there and back without having to get winched out of trouble.
Nope, that’s when mud-terrain tires are the only thing for it. Mud-terrain tires are an especially great choice for trucks with lift kits, giving you the extra ground clearance you need to get across rough, rocky terrain and brush. They’re also designed with damage-resistant tread formulations, reinforced internal construction, and an extra-aggressive tread pattern for deeper mud, sand, or snow. That’s where the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T comes in.
Mickey Thompson has spent decades cementing their reputation as a supplier of tough tires for off-road use, with a rally and competition record that can back it up. The Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T took home top honors in the 2023 King of the Hammers Every Man Challenge, making it a definite mud-terrain tire for a new generation of trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs.
But you shouldn’t just take our word for it – we’ll take you along for a closer look as we dive into this Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T review.
Features and Benefits
Here’s some of the features and innovations you can find with the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T:
- Aggressive asymmetric mud-terrain tread pattern is designed for durability and traction in the roughest conditions without excessive noise or sloppy handling
- Extra-large four-pitch Sidebiters deliver great lateral traction for cornering or to claw out of ruts
- Internal construction includes Powerply XD, with a high-tensile denier cord added to the angled third ply for better steering response, puncture resistance, and highway stability
- Stone ejectors expel rocks and debris wedged into tread grooves, helping to protect the casing itself
- High-void tread design flings out mud and sand so there’s always a clear section of tread to dig in as the tire turns
- T4 silica-enriched rubber compound is designed for long wear, extra durability, and enhanced traction on wet roads
- Mud scoops and angled shoulder scallops incorporated into tread
- Can be used aired-down for rock crawling
- Available in sizes up to 24” and flotation size for a wide variety of vehicle fitments
Pros and Cons
So, is this the right mud terrain tire for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the Baja Boss M/T’s strengths:
PROS:
- Tenacious traction on a variety of surfaces
- Good flotation on sand, when aired-down
- Incredibly durable for rough terrain and conditions
Unfortunately, no tire is perfect and the Baja Boss M/T does have some drawbacks too:
CONS:
- Noisy on some pavement surfaces
- Not Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) rated for winter traction
- No limited manufacturer tread life warranty from manufacturer
SimpleTire’s view on Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T tires
If you’re looking for a mud-terrain tire like the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T, you’ve probably got a certain set of expectations in mind to start out with. Well, we’re happy to report this is a tire that will check all those boxes for you.
The Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T is competition-proven and draws on the company’s extensive history in rally and racing arenas. It excels in soupy, gloppy mud, with an aggressive tread that’s designed to break suction and eject mud as the tire turns, and the Sidebiters tread feature grabs onto rocks and roots to get you through the slickest, nastiest terrain. Aired down to 10-15 psi, the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T delivers good flotation on sand, distributing vehicle weight nicely, and the sidewalls can buckle and conform to rocks and obstacles in aired-down state, for durability in situations that would kill some other tires.
The Baja Boss M/T is lightweight, reducing a vehicle’s unsprung weight for improved braking and handling performance. On the pavement at highway speed, it doesn’t exhibit the wobble, vibration, wander, and squirrely-ness of some mud-terrain tires, and it’s surprisingly composed around town. That said, tread noise can be pretty intrusive with any mud-terrain tire and the Baja Boss M/T is no exception. And no, this tire doesn’t have a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating, but all road tests indicate that snow isn’t an issue for it. Finally, the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T isn’t covered by a manufacturer's limited tread life warranty (most mud-terrain tires aren’t), but Mickey Thompson does provide good warranty coverage for their products.
If you’re serious about mud and off-road driving with your 4x4, the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T is the tire for you.

295/55/20 fits my 2021 LT2 TrailBoss perfect! Very surprised with the on road performance with these AGGRESSIVE off road goers! Love these tires, wish i could link a pic
Wouldn't expect anything less from Mickeys They handle really well on snow and slush they handle well on ice if you take it a little easier. They aren't super noisy but they are mud tires after all they will make a little noise. Haven't had them on long enough to just tread. Overall they're a fantastic tire and I will be putting them on my jeeps as well
