  • Grabber APT

General Tire is a highly admired brand amongst CUV, SUV, and truck manufacturers. The company's product portfolio includes a range of tire types such as mud, mild and aggressive all-terrain, and highway-terrain. General Tire continues to be the producer of American-quality tires at the company's Illinois facility in Mount Vernon each year despite most of these being currently produced in Europe, as the brand was acquired by Continental AG in the year 1987. The manufacturer places its products somewhat below the premium competition while continuing to place a strong emphasis on durability, performance, and comfort. The Grabber APT is one of General's best-selling all-terrain tires and was created for truck and SUV drivers who desire some extra off-road traction without compromising on-road performance and comfort. During our General Grabber APT review, we found the tire to generate excellent wet traction through high resistance to aquaplaning.

    Features and Benefits

    General Grabber APT tire review

The General Grabber APT is offered in a wide range of P-metric and LT-metric sizes, with wheel diameters ranging from 16 inches to 20 inches. You will not get flotation sizes here, which is understandable for a mild all-terrain tire as lifted truck owners will require a more aggressive tread pattern and compound. Apart from LT275/65R18 and P275/70R18, all other tires are rated with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol for use in moderate to severe winter weather conditions. Grabber APT is available with DURAGEN technology for protection against chips and cuts. The tread pattern has been specifically designed with General’s StabiliTREAD Technology for maximizing tire durability through a larger footprint. Our General Grabber APT tire review resulted in low road noise on highways and great ride quality. Additionally, the Grabber APT is backed by a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty.

To check tread wear, the Grabber APT relies on industry-standard TWIs (Tread Wear Indicators). These narrow rubber bars are embossed in the tire at the bottom of the grooves 2/32-inches higher than the base, enabling them to be spotted easily. To ensure proper and safe traction in snow, it is important to have a minimum tread depth of 5/32-inches.

    Pros and Cons

    General Grabber APT review

While creating the General Grabber APT review, we found it easy to understand the reasons that make this tire brand popular amongst several drivers. Its ability to be suitably used across various terrains is what makes it a great choice. The tire also presents an attractive face for any vehicle, sporting a black or an outlined white letter sidewall. It receives robust and wide shoulders for an enhanced handling capability through enhanced steering responses, as a result of which the tire instantly reacts to the steering input in a linear fashion. Straight-line tracking and on-center feel are good enough to prevent long driving sessions from being tiring.

    PROS

    • Effective braking in wet weather and great hydroplaning resistance due to full-depth sipes and staggered circumferential grooves
    • Good grip on dry surfaces
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification enables better handling and performance in heavy snow
    • Superior traction on packed surfaces like gravel and dirt
    • Comfortable ride
    • Low road noise

    CONS

    • Does not feel very confident over wet off-road terrains
    • Not suitable for driving over ice
    • Struggles over large rocks and mud

SimpleTire’s view on General Grabber APT tires

Not every SUV owner is the kind who would go blasting into difficult off-road terrains at all times. There are many who desire comfort over long distances and need to take mild off-road terrains at times. Our General Grabber APT review enables us to understand this as a tire that provides additional off-road traction without compromising on comfort and performance. A great mix of dry and wet traction is always a desirable character of any tire, as seen here. With these tires, you’ll not find your truck hunting for traction during hard acceleration and braking distances will be short. At the same time, it is also a great option for people in areas that experience heavy snow for long periods of time.

Vehicles the General Grabber APT is an OEM tire for

It was in 1955 that General made its first entry into the OEM market. The company started out as a tire supplier for General Motors and then moved to other vehicles. You can expect the 2017 Nissan Titan, 2021 Ford F-150, 2019 Nissan Titan XD PRO-4X, and 2016 Nissan Titan XD PRO-4X to be factory-fitted with General Grabber APT. Other vehicles you may consider include the Nissan Frontier, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Colorado, and Toyota Tundra.

Tires are louder than I thought they would be. Wouldn't recommend for highway driving. Good traction thought.

Purchased these for my 2006 quad cab Tundra to replace well-worn Hankook Dynapro ATM. This truck is mostly used for hunting and fishing, so it hauls a lot of gear, tows the boat, and drives on both highway and gravel roads. I've had these tires on the truck for almost 6 months now, and they've been on dry and wet pavement, gravel roads, deep mud, and deep snow. They're much quieter than the previous tires, and are very nice on-road tires. They also handle well in the deep mud at the duck lease, and the 12" of snow we got this past weekend in central IL. They're not as aggressively treaded as previous tires, but still handle the mud and snow well enough, with much better on-road performance.
